The Moto Razr 2022 launches on August 2, and the leaked specifications indicate Motorola might finally get the foldable smartphone right this time.

The Moto Razr 2022's launch on Aug. 2 will mark Motorola's return to the foldable smartphone category after a two-year hiatus. The new Razr will be the Lenovo-owned company's third attempt at making a foldable smartphone, and it will go up against Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip 4 which is scheduled for release on Aug. 10.

Apart from the Moto Razr 2022, Motorola's launch event will also bring a second flagship smartphone called the Moto X30 Pro. The phone will have a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip and 125W fast charging. However, the highlight of the phone will be its 200MP rear camera, a first on a smartphone.

The Moto Razr 2022 will feature an upgraded design that starts with an improved hinge system. It will also have a bigger cover display that's 6.67-inches in size. The new screen gets rid of the notch in favor of a centered punch hole and also does away with the protruding chin of the Razr 5G. It was earlier reported that the phone will have a bigger cover display, but information found in the database of China's certification agency, TENAA, says otherwise. The certification page reveals that the cover screen measures 2.65-inches, which is slightly smaller than the 2.7-inch display of the Razr 5G. However, teasers posted by Motorola show the cover display will be gaining added functionality.

Similar information was shared by the Chinese tipster, Digital Chat Station. According to him, the Razr 2022 has a 6.67-inch OLED main display with a 2,400 x 1,080 resolution and a 2.65-inch OLED screen with an 800 x 573 resolution for the cover display. An earlier report has disclosed that the main display will have a 120Hz refresh rate. It has also been confirmed that the phone will be powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor paired with up to 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. Surprisingly, the TENAA certification page mentions there will be an 18GB RAM version of the phone. Previous reports have revealed the Razr 2022 will have dual rear cameras. The primary rear camera will be a 50MP sensor and it will be paired with a 13MP ultra-wide camera. In addition, the front-facing camera has also been upgraded to a 32MP sensor.

Both sources have also confirmed a significant upgrade has been made to the battery. The TENAA certification page shows the Moto Razr 2022 will have a dual-cell battery, one of which has a 660mAh capacity and another with a 2,660mAh capacity, for a combined total of 3,320mAh. While this is bigger than the 2,800mAh battery inside the Razr 5G, this value is actually the rated capacity. The actual battery size according to Digital Chat Station is 3,500mAh. The tipster has also revealed the Razr 2022 will support 33W fast charging. This is a significant bump over the 15W supported by the 2020 model. Motorola has made the right decision by not only upgrading the battery capacity but also the charging technology. This should give it an edge over the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 4 which reportedly has a slightly bigger 3,700mAh battery but slower 25W fast charging.

The Razr 2022 should run Android 12 with Motorola's MY UX on top. It will also have a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, a physical SIM slot (since eSIM support isn't common in China), and a USB-C port for charging. It will be heavier in comparison to the previous generation at 200g but also slightly thinner at 7.62mm. The phone is expected to cost €1,149 ($1,178) in Europe, which is cheaper than what the Razr 5G cost at launch. The Moto Razr 2022 will be announced in China first, with an international launch expected to follow soon.
